For more than 20 years, the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work program has given children the opportunity to see just exactly what their parent does during the work day. This year, on April 28, 2016, over 3.5 million employers are anticipated to participate, exposing millions of young people to hands-on, career exploration experiences.
In celebration of this national event, we’re hosting a $1,000 Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Giveaway on April 28. To enter, you must post a photo to our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groundlink/) of your child going to work with you during the week of April 25-29. Entries must be submitted by 12:31PM EST on May 1st. One winner will receive the $1,000 prize to be used for their child’s future; to be announced May 6th on Facebook and Twitter.
If you plan to participate in this year’s program, here are a few helpful tips for a smooth day at the office for you and your child.
1. Get Approval
If your company does not have a formal Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work program, you need to talk to HR and your boss to ensure it’s ok to bring your child into work for the day. If your company is interested in starting a program, details can be found at http://daughtersandsonstowork.org/.
2. Plan the Day
To ensure you and your child have a great experience, plan ahead of time how he or she will take part in your day. Are there tasks or activities they can help you with? Also talk to them about what they want to learn, see or experience and determine how much you can make happen. And, most importantly, set ground rules and be specific about what is expected of them while at your office.
3. Arrange Travel
For metro commuters, dealing with train schedules and chaotic subway travel may not be ideal for getting you and your child to and from the office; and can be frightening for some young children. Instead, consider hiring a black car service, such as GroundLink, for a safe, comfortable, reliable travel experience that will make the day even more memorable for your child.
In addition to the $1,000 giveaway, GroundLink is offering 15% off travel on April 25-29. Use promo code GOTOWORK2016 when you book your ride.
4. Give Your Coworkers the Heads Up
Before April 28, let your coworkers know you’ll be bringing your child to work with you on Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. Some of your coworkers may even be interested in showing your child what they do, or have an activity they can participate in. Also block out the day on your office calendar to avoid last minute meeting invites.
5. Go to Work & Have Fun
When you arrive together introduce your child to everyone in the office and give them a quick explanation of what each coworker does. Don’t assume your child is completely comfortable being in your office, so put them at ease with some fun, humor and lightheartedness. And most importantly, don’t ignore them, even if the day gets particularly busy. This is a special day for them that should be treated as such.
